CIO and Chief Medical Officer Share How MedeAnalytics’ Integrated Solutions Improved Hospital Care and Quality Outcomes at CHIME09 Fall CIO Forum
Evidenced-based assurance to help organisations achieve World Class Commissioning, improved provider care and targeted healthcare outcomes.
EMERYVILLE, Calif., October 30, 2009 — Rick Schooler, vice president and chief information officer of Orlando Health, and Rich Boehler, M.D., chief medical officer of St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) in Towson, Md., yesterday discussed how MedeAnalytics’ integrated performance management solutions helped their hospitals transform data into actionable information, resulting in significant clinical and operational improvements. Their presentation was made at the CHIME09 Fall CIO Forum in Indian Wells, Calif.
Schooler shared that the use of MedeAnalytics’ solutions helped Orlando Health reduce accounts receivable days outstanding by 15 days, with each day of A/R worth $4.4 million, and pared self pay bad debt by 30 percent, resulting in $15 million in recovered revenue. As a development partner, Orlando Health has been a progressive user of MedeAnalytics’ array of advanced solutions and services since 2004, recently expanding its suite to include the company’s Clinical Resource Analytics solution.
Dr. Boehler related that by showing physicians how they use resources compared to their peers, SJMC has increased revenue, reduced the number of claims denied by insurers, improved documentation and coding, and reduced the number of specialists brought into patient cases. He noted that the hospital reduced average length of stay by 0.4 days, resulting in a savings of $2.6 million, and improved coding accuracy, which helped capture $9.2 million of revenue that would have otherwise been lost.
The two presenters stressed that increasingly an organization’s survival requires the integration, mining and flexible viewing and use of disparate sources of data in ways that transform data to information and then into knowledge, and they encouraged CIOs to take a leadership role in ensuring that their organizations have the information tools needed to successfully manage performance.
“Our experience makes it clear that CIOs can impact the quality of an organization’s patient care and outcomes through the integration of information into performance management solutions that improve financial, operational and clinical outcomes,” said Schooler.
